Equipment Installation Ceremony at MUST

The opening ceremony of equipment installation and renovated construction materials laboratory took place on the 30th of May 2019 at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST). The new equipment and laboratory renovation have been financed from the project ‘Improving resource-efficiency and cleaner production in the Mongolian construction sector through materials recovery’ implemented with the support of the European Union and Czech Development Agency. The ceremony was opened by Prof. Ochirbat, President of MUST, Ms Ninjgarav,  Director of the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Ms Jana Zilkova, Head of Mission of Caritas Czech Republic and Mr Pierre-Yves Lucas, EU Cooperation Team Leader of the EU Delegation in Mongolia.

The industry experts have noted that introducing smart technology that is able to recycle solid waste, rock, metal and organic materials is essential for maintaining ecological balance. “Solid waste from the building industry has a great impact on the environment. Therefore, we are certain that it is a good idea to tackle this issue,” said Mr Pierre-Yves Lucas, EU cooperation team leader of EU Delegation in Mongolia.

The new laboratory and equipment will support students and professionals in the construction and recycling sector to get a proper training on CDW and promote sustainable consumption and production in Mongolia. Moreover, various CDW-based products will be tested more efficiently.

Ulaanbaatar has been producing 350-400 thousand tons of waste annually and construction and demolition waste represents 20 – 30 % of all solid waste. The renovation of the laboratory and new equipment will improve the conditions for research and experiments conducted in CDW management and will have a positive impact on the sustainable development of Mongolia.
