Supporting a greener and more energy efficient construction industry in Mongolia

Mongolia is currently experiencing a construction boom and it has become evident that there is a lack of knowledge regarding the ecological footprint of the construction industry among the stakeholders in this sector. From the design to the materials used and the insulation techniques applied, there is little awareness of how to reduce the environmental impact of the construction process, and lack of knowledge of the economic benefits of environmentally friendly materials and technologies.

Furthermore, there are few regulations with regard to reducing the environmental impact of construction work. Consequently, much energy, water and material are wasted and the construction process is detrimental to the local environment. There is a need to improve current practices so as to protect both the environment and human health. Thus, Supporting a greener and more energy efficient construction industry in Mongolia project implemented in 2014-2016 under the financial support of the European Union.

The overall objective of the project was, through promoting sustainable growth, to contribute to the economic prosperity and poverty reduction in Mongolia and to the mitigation of climate change. As well as, the specific objective was to promote sustainable production and sustainable consumption patterns and behavior in the construction industry in Mongolia by mobilizing the private sector along with relevant public sector authorities. To achieve these objectives, the project focused on three main target groups namely (i) Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the construction industry, (ii) Vocational training schools and university teaching construction subjects and their students, and (iii) Government bodies responsible for construction and environmental policy and standards.

In order to reach the objectives of the project, the project aimed to achieve 4 expected results & complete dozens of innovative activities:

ER 1: Green construction products using fly ash have been identified, developed and approved.

ER2: SMEs in the construction industry are making and selling environmentally friendly (fly ash) construction products.

ER3: SMEs in the construction industry are using environmentally friendly construction products and practices.

ER4: Policy environment is facilitating environmentally friendly construction products and practices
